Programme Highlights

Conventional thermal power plants and heat engines generally do not convert all of their thermal energy into electricity. In most heat engines, more than half of the energy is lost as excess heat. By capturing the excess heat, Combined Heating and Power System (CHP) uses heat that would be wasted in a conventional power plant, potentially increasing the overall efficiency, and so, as a result, consuming less fuel to produce the same amount of useful energy.

The Hong Kong and China Gas Co. Ltd. has worked with the Hospital Authority to develop the first commercially successful case of utilizing landfill gas in CHP plant for a distributed energy system at Tai Po AHML Nethersole Hospital.  The system generates electricity by landfill gas and recovers the waste heat from flue exhaust and jacket cooling water for steam and hot water generation.  The overall system efficiency is above 80%. Such project has set an excellent example of smart usage of CHP system, the advantage of distributed energy system and social engagement on sustainability.
