Programme Highlight

Black Point Power Station

“Black Point Power Station (BPPS) is Hong Kong's first natural gas-fired power plant. With a total capacity of 2,525MW, BPPS is one of the largest natural gas-fired plants in the world, consisting of seven 312.5MW units and one upgraded 337.5MW unit which were commissioned progressively between 1996 and 2006.

BPPS adopts the Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) technology which uses natural gas as the primary fuel to drive the gas turbine to produce electricity, while ultra-low sulphur diesel is used as a backup fuel. Instead of entering the chimney, the gas turbine exhaust is further directed into the Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) in which the heat energy of the 600 degree Celsius exhaust gas is used to produce steam for the additional steam cycle. This significantly enhances the overall thermal efficiency of the cycle.

BPPS currently utilizes two sources of natural gas supply:

Supply from the Yacheng 13-1 gas field to the south of Hainan Island in the South China Sea via a 778km long subsea pipeline. The gas supply was secured in the early 1990s under a long term agreement.

Supply from the second West East Pipeline (WEP II) through a 20km length offshore pipeline from Dachan Island in ShenZhen to BPPS since 2013.

Before entering the CCGT units, the natural gas will enter the Gas Receiving Stations for filtering, measurement, heating and pressure regulation.”
