Programme Highlight

Zero Carbon Building

Screen ClippingZCB is a pioneering and inspiring project. It will not only serve as a platform for the construction industry to share knowledge and expertise in low/zero carbon building design and technologies, but also help to raise community awareness of low carbon living.

Screen ClippingThe ZCB in Hong Kong generates on-site renewable energy from photovoltaic panels and a tri-generation system using biofuel made of waste cooking oil and achieves zero net carbon emissions on an annual basis. Beyond the common definition of a ‘zero carbon building’, ZCB exports surplus energy to offset embodied carbon of its construction process and major structural materials.

The new thematic visit aims to showcase the latest technology and provide innovative visitor touch-points including games with Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) experience in the newly built Experience Center. The Experience Centre is divided into 4 thematic zones, namely Climate Change” & I, Smart Living”, “Smart City & Construction” and “Smart Technology & Screen ClippingHealth”. Our participants are expected to realize how we respond to climate change by smart technology such as how it could:

1. help commercial development going into the future;

2. improve the quality of life;

3. raise standard of well-being, etc.

Our participants would be inspired and create a Smart Hong Kong together. They could learn more about “Smart City” technology, try the interactive displays first-hand, and be up-to-dated on future technology.

Report

 Technical visit to Zero Carbon Building

By Ms. Mandy Lai

Organized by the Gas & Energy Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), the captioned visit was successfully held on 30 September 2017 in Kowloon Bay. A total of 29 participants participated in the event.

Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) is a pioneering and inspiring project, completed in 2012. This first ZCB not only serves as a platform for the construction industry to share knowledge and expertise in low/zero carbon building design and technologies, but also helps to raise community awareness of low carbon living.

The ZCB in Hong Kong generates on-site renewable energy from photovoltaic panels and a tri-generation system using biofuel made of waste cooking oil and achieves zero net carbon emissions on an annual basis. Beyond the common definition of a ‘zero carbon building’, ZCB exports surplus energy to offset embodied carbon of its construction process and major structural materials.

The new Experience Centre, named “Climate Change and My Smart City” has been launched in early June 2017. The new thematic visit aims to showcase the latest technology and provide innovative visitor touch-points including games with Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) experience in the newly built Experience Center. The Experience Centre is divided into 4 thematic zones, namely “Climate Change” & I, “Smart Living”, “Smart City & Construction” and “Smart Technology & Health”. The participants further acquired the concept of zero carbon building through the guided tour, and realized how we respond to climate change by smart technology such as how it could help commercial development going into the future; improve the quality of life and raise standard of well being.

 Our participants were inspired by the concerted effort to create a smart Hong Kong together. We would like to thank Construction Industry Council (CIC) for its support in making this visit a success.
