To ensure gas safety in the commercial
industry, it is of paramount importance for the trade to conduct proper
inspection, operation and maintenance of the commercial gas appliances.
The Electrical and Mechanical Services
Department (EMSD) has issued the Code of Practice (CoP) GU 06 and GU 21 stipulating
the requirements for LPG and town gas installations respectively for catering
purposes in restaurants / food preparation establishments. These codes serve to set out the
minimum standards of safe working practices for the owners and operators of
restaurants / food preparation establishments, registered gas contractors
(RGCs) and registered gas installers (RGIs) to follow. With
examples of gas related incidents, the speaker
will highlight the requirements of the Gas Safety Ordinance in relation to
commercial gas installations and the essential gas safety guidance set out in
CoP, in particular the conduction of regular safety inspection by RGCs as well
as interlocking between mechanical ventilation system and gas appliances.

On 31 October
2017, an informative presentation on Gas Safety of Appliances for Commercial
Uses was given at the HKIE Headquarters by Ir Fion Leung, Engineer from the
Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD).
To ensure gas safety in the commercial industry, it
is of paramount importance for the trade to conduct proper inspection,
operation and maintenance of the commercial gas appliances. In the seminar, Ir Leung started by presenting the legislative framework
for ensuring Gas Safety of Appliances for Commercial Uses, for instance, roles
of different stakeholders, requirements for gas installations, etc.
EMSD has issued the Code of Practice (CoP) GU 06 and GU 21
stipulating the requirements for LPG and town gas installations respectively
for catering purposes in restaurants and/ or food preparation establishments.
These codes serve to set out the minimum standards of safe working practices
for the owners and operators of restaurants and/ or food preparation
establishments, registered gas contractors (RGCs) and registered gas installers
(RGIs) to follow.
Then Ir Leung shared with participants some examples of gas related
incidents, including CO Poisoning, Wok Bounce, Flash Fire incidents. She highlighted the requirements of the Gas
Safety Ordinance in relation to commercial gas installations and the essential
gas safety guidance set out in CoP, in particular the conduction of regular
safety inspection by RGCs as well as interlocking between mechanical
ventilation system and gas appliances.
The talk was concluded a
question-and-answer session. Ir S M Chau, Sr Engineer from EMSD also joined to
conduct the Q &A session. Members were enthusiastic in raising questions of
self-concern.
