Technical Visit to EMSD Exhibition Gallery and District Cooling System at Kai Tak Development

Date, time & venue

2018-09-08;10:00 - 13:00;G/F Lobby, EMSD Headquarters, 3 Kai Shing Street, Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong

Programme Highlight

The EMSD Exhibition Gallery aims to promote the awareness of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. It also introduces the works of EMSD that are closely related to our daily lives through those interactive exhibits. The Exhibition Gallery on G/F showcases 17 exhibits to introduce green building features, and the initiatives of EMSD on sustainable development. The exhibition area on 7/F contains 4 exhibits to introduce the works of EMSD in electrical, amusement ride, gas and lifts & escalators safety. Moreover, the rooftop viewing gallery offers a breathtaking view of an array of over 2,000 photovoltaic panels which altogether has a total area exceeding 3,000 m2.

The District Cooling System (DCS) at Kai Tak Development (KTD) is a large-scale centralized air-conditioning system. It distributes cooling capacity in the form of chilled water to consumer buildings in the KTD through underground water piping network. The DCS at KTD comprises two central chiller plants cum seawater pump house, underground chilled water distribution piping network, seawater supply and discharge pipes and consumer substations located in the buildings to interface with the building’s own chilled water circulation systems. Given its high energy efficiency, the DCS, which can serve over 1.5 million m2 of non-domestic air-conditioned gross floor area, can achieve a maximum annual saving in electricity consumption of 85 million kilowatt-hour, which is equivalent to a reduction of 59,500 tonnes of carbon emission per annum.

Technical Visit to EMSD Exhibition Gallery and District Cooling System at Kai Tak Development

By Winky Lui

A half-day visit to EMSD Exhibition Gallery and District Cooling System at Kai Tak Development was successfully held on 8th September 2018, organized by the Gas and Energy Division. Around 30 members participated in the technical visit.

A guided tour was arranged to visit the EMSD Exhibition Gallery, including the rooftop viewing gallery which showcases a breathtaking view of over 2,300 photovoltaic panels with a capacity of 350 kW. 17 exhibits in the Gallery on G/F aim to present the concepts of energy efficiency, green building design and sustainable development. Our members had lots of fun to learn the concepts through those interactive games and displays.

Moving on to the second part of the visit, we headed to the North Plant of Kai Tak District Cooling System. As a pilot project commissioned by EMSD, the district cooling system (DCS) is Hong Kong’s first large-scale centralized air conditioning system to provided air cooling to Kai Tak district, utilizing chilled seawater as a cooling medium to replace traditional air-conditioning systems. The chilled water travels through an underground water network to distribute cooling capacity to commercial and institutional buildings of an area spanning 1.7 million m2. DCS consumes 35 percent and 20 percent less electricity as compared to traditional air-cooled and individual water-cooled air-conditioning systems using cooling towers respectively. Given its high energy efficiency, the DCS helps the community save up to 85 million kWh of electricity consumption per year, which is equivalent to a reduction of 59,500 tonnes of carbon emission per annum.

The visit came to a fruitful end with a Q&A session followed by the presentation of appreciation certificates by the Chairman of Gas and Energy Division, Ir Eric Pang, to the representatives of EMSD Exhibition Gallery and Kai Tak District Cooling System to thank their support and coordination of the visit.
