Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plant at Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole
Hospital
Utilizing landfill gas to fuel
the combined heat and power (CHP) system to generate electricity and supply steam and hot
water for various hospital facilities, Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital is
the first hospital in Hong Kong to adopt such an environmentally friendly
system, adding another milestone in the development of renewable energy in Hong
Kong. Not only does this system save electricity costs for the hospital, it
also reduces carbon emission effectively.
This energy project has won two
international awards presented by the Association of Energy Engineers,
including the “Energy Project of the Year 2018 – Pacific Rim Region” and
“Institutional Energy Management – Pacific Rim Region”. It would be a valuable
opportunity for our members to learn about the smart usage of the CHP system,
the benefits of distributed energy system and social engagement on
sustainability.
Towngas Tai Po Plant
Founded in 1862, The Hong Kong and
China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) is Hong Kong’s first public utility which
has a commitment to provide its customers with safe, clean and reliable energy
supply and efficient service.
In Hong Kong, town gas is produced
at two production plants. 98% of gas supply comes from the Tai Po Plant, while
the rest is made up by the Ma Tau Kok Plant. The Tai Po Plant is located in the
Tai Po Industrial Estate, covering an area of 11.71 hectares. It has a maximum
supply capacity of 9.6 million standard cubic metres of gas per day. To promote
environmental protection with the use of clean fuel, the Company introduced
natural gas as a new feedstock in 2006 to replace portions of naphtha for the
generation of town gas.
During the visit, a briefing
session and a guided tour will be arranged for participants to gain insight
into the town gas production process, plant facilities, safety measures as well
as environmental initiatives.
