Event Highlight

 

In today's dynamic and interconnected world, organizations face numerous challenges that can impact their reputation, stakeholder relationships, and overall success. It is imperative for professionals to possess the knowledge and expertise to navigate these challenges effectively. The speaker Ir Jason FAN will provide a briefing in successful integrating community services and corporate affairs into various scenarios with some firsthand experiences.

 

Speakers

 

Ir Fan was the Director - Corporate Affairs (External Relations) of CLP Power HK before his retirement in January 2023. He has invaluable practical experience in managing and mitigating the sentiments of political parties and community leaders during and after emergency and crisis events. He recently handled real cases including:

The major West to East natural gas pipeline damage in Shenzhen in 2015 resulted in a loss of natural gas supply to CLP for power generation for over two months;

The major power outage in 2018 during the super typhoon MANGKHUT, officially HK’s most intense typhoon since records began in 1946, with over 70,000 customers being affected;

The Yuen Long cable bridge fire incident in 2022 that resulted in power supply loss to over 160,000 customers in Yuen Long and Tuen Mun..

Crisis Management - Communication & Local Community Relations

Organized by HKIE Gas and Energy Division, around 400 members from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) attended a webinar conducted by Vice Chairman of HKIE Gas & Energy Division Ir Jason Fan on 20 September 2023. The primary objective of the webinar is to explain about the handling skills of media and community stakeholders during times of crisis. The webinar covered key characteristics of a crisis, the establishment of a Crisis Management Team (CMT), and provided valuable insights through the analysis of two practical case studies.

 

The presentation began by defining the characteristics of a crisis. He emphasized that a crisis is an unpredictable event that can threaten an organization's reputation, operations, and stakeholder relationships. Understanding the unique nature of a crisis is crucial for effectively managing it.

 

The webinar further delved into the strategies needed to address the media and community stakeholders during a crisis. The significance of transparency, empathy, and timely communication was emphasized. He provided practical tips on establishing and maintaining positive relationships with the media, as well as engaging with the community in a respectful and empathetic manner.  Two practical case studies were analyzed to illustrate the concepts discussed.

 

In conclusion, the webinar on Crisis Management from a media and community perspective, shed light on the critical aspects of crisis management. Participants gained insights into the characteristics of a crisis, learned about the setup and functions of a Crisis Management Team, and discovered effective ways to handle media and community stakeholders during crisis situations. The practical case studies provided valuable real-life examples, demonstrating the significance of transparent and empathetic communication.
