Report Technical Visit to Fuel Cell
Laboratory of Energy Institute of HKUST
On 27 April 2019,
the HKIE Gas & Energy Division jointly organized this visit with IGEM Far
East District Section.
The technical visit started
off with seminars by Professor Shao and Mr. Qing, followed by visits to the Fuel
Cell & Redox Flow Battery laboratories.
Professor Shao
Minhua, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological
Engineering of the HKUST. He is also the
Associate Director of the HKUST Energy Institute and the Director of the
Sustainable Energy Engineering Undergraduate Programme. Mr. Qing Chen, is with the Department of
Chemistry and Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering of the
HKUST.
The seminars focused
on the research and development of fuel cells and flow batteries technology and
its latest applications. Professor Shao
explained the principles of different types of fuel cells in the market, their
applications and performances, and some real-life cases of fuel cell
applications such as electric vehicles, air planes and even space shuttle. He
also presented a forecast of fuel cell usage in the future. Mr. Qing gave a very detailed presentation on
the principles of Redox Flow Batteries (RFB), its history and development, and its
performance considerations and applications.
After the seminars,
we visited the fuel cell & RFB laboratories. There we saw the advanced fuel cell test
station and computer monitoring & simulation platform for fuel cell. We also saw working models of RFBs. The technical visit ended with closing
remarks by Ir. Steven N.K. Chan and Ir. Patrick Y.P.Ng of the EG Division and
Ir. Charles Chan of IGEM. We would like to thank Professor Shao and Mr. Qing
for their valuable time in sharing their knowledge with our members.
